Our History

A Legacy of Regulatory Excellence

The National Insurance Authority was established to bring order, confidence, and consumer protection to Somaliland's growing insurance sector. Over the years, NIA has built a robust regulatory framework that underpins the entire industry.

2004

NIA established by Presidential Decree under the Insurance Act of Somaliland, marking the formal creation of the national insurance regulator.

2008

First comprehensive licensing framework introduced, bringing all operating insurance companies under formal regulatory oversight.

2012

Launch of the mandatory motor third-party liability insurance scheme, extending coverage to all registered vehicles in Somaliland.

2016

Introduction of the National Health Insurance pilot programme in partnership with the Ministry of Health.

2020

Adoption of updated solvency and capital adequacy standards aligned with international best practice.

2024

Launch of the digital claims processing initiative, reducing average claim settlement time by 40%.
